Hard Panniers That Fit a Wild Star

It seems Yamaha are re calling those bikes with chassis numbers as follows

1. JYAVP081 00301 ( or 0000301 ) to 0010047

2. JYAVP081 0010392 to 0012035

3. JYAVP081 0012997 to 0013612

4. JYAVP081 0015201 to 0016852 ( I believe that this was the original lot re called in 2004 )

I would suggest that the English ring Yamaha UK on 01932 358000 ( The Dutch can as well if they wish but may want to ring Yamaha Europe but I dont have a telephone number for them ) ask for Customer Services just to be 100% satisfied that your bike is on the re call list or not.

If your Bike is a UK model it should be registered on Yamahas database and you will receive a letter automatically if it is to be recalled, if it is an import or foreign registered it is unlikely to be on the data base and you therefore wouldnt be notified.

I think it would pay you to ring Yamaha anyway just to be sure.

The problems encountered as far as I can understand are subsequent to the original problems during 2004 when a load of wildstars were re called for gear box troubles. The end result being ( without warning ) that the rear wheel locks up.

Further to this I have also received this,
Steve's Wildstar backwheel locked up on the way home from Darlington.
Luckily he was only doing about 40 mph and the traffic was slow moving.
The gear box had locked up because the bike should have been part of a recall in 2004.
Yamaha have paid for all the repairs and the bike is now back on the road.
This could have been so much worse.
If you need any more information on this,
please email Steve on,

Hi all, As I understand this recall program is for all WildStar mentioned in the chassis number list.
If your bike was modified last time, sorry, Yamaha told me that all bikes will get the letter.
The new modification is different than the last one. (more parts)
In Holland also the bikes owners other than imported by Yamaha will also receive the letter.
They will also get an invitation for the modification.
Advice is to wait for the letter from Yamaha.

Latest news

I rung Yamaha today, my bike is on the recall list,
they can only let people know who have filled in the new owner form in the service manual,
or who have otherwise told Yamaha they are the new owners.
This was not me, it could also be YOU,
do not take it for granted that you will automatically be told,
or found through the DVLA

I received this letter regarding the Wildstar problems,
many thanks to Ian for taking the trouble to let us know we were of help to him.
Regarding the tracking down of owners,

I told you so!

Hi ,
I don’t really know who to contact on this,
but having scoured lots of Wildstar sites trying to track down the cure to an unrelated problem,
I saw the articles on the Wildstar recall issue.
Mine is 2nd hand so Yamaha don’t know I exist so I duly phoned them and was told,
yep it needs to be recalled.
If I hadn’t chanced on this notification on your website,
I would have been quite happily tooling around on a dodgy bike with potentially major problems as well as the safety bit.
So thanks once again, really, really appreciate that knowledge being out there.
Best Regards,
Ian Ellis

Clymer Wildstar Manual Now Available

4th May 2007

Hi Terry,
You may remember I contacted you previously re the transmission problem on the Wildstars which is subject to the recall.
I am seeking Advice really to carry out some risk analysis.
My Wildy was imported into this country,
therefore Yamaha had to go through some convoluted manual process,
in order to get the gearbox fixed under the terms of the recall with the result that the earliest I can get it done is on the 21st May.
(and it is a three day job as long as there are no hitches)
I am taking the bike to the Picos on the 28th May so I reckon I willl have a 2000 3000 mile trip ahead of me,
on a bike that has potentially been pulled apart by the dealer then put back together again,
with very little time to sort out any probs from its time in the garage.
The bike has only done 7800 miles, do you have a feel for when the problem manifests itself?
any help much appreciated
Best Regards Ian

My Reply

Hi Ian
All I can say to you is be careful.
Janet Butterworth's Husband had his back wheel lock up.
There was no warning at all, it just happened, without looking it up I think he had done 24000 miles.
I took my wildstar to Greece and back, then found out it was subject to a recall,
don't mind telling you I had a loose bowel moment, especially when I thought of the mountain passes.
I have since had mine done, and like you I was a little uncertain about it for a while,
the dealers fortunately for me did a very good job for me, (Thank You CMC) I am sure yours will too.
Trouble is you feel so vulnerable on two wheels don't you?
When you get it back remember that you have a lot of new parts in the gearbox,
so it will need a bit of careful riding anyway.
Just take care and hopefully the trip will be as fantastic as ours was,
Regards Terry
